In
recent years, there have been a number of factors which are
affecting the demographics of Cyprus, which make the above
statistics quite worrying. These are the following:
1. Cyprus’s accession in the European Union has eased the
access in the market for many EU citizens for job opportunities.
2. The opening of the crossings since 2003 has opened the
market for Turkish Cypriots.
3. More immigrant workers (e.g. domestic workers) are entering
the workforce.
4. Increasing diversity in the workplace from a variety of
others who either visit Cyprus for short periods of time or
settle down for longer periods (e.g. offshore company employees).
5. More women entering the labour market.
6. Disabled people are becoming more common in the labour
market.
7. Younger people (e.g. high-school students, college students,
etc.) are entering the workforce while people of retirement
age choose to stay in the workforce.
8. Homosexuals are slowly beginning to assert their right
to be accepted as equals in the workforce.
As
Cyprus is becoming more and more multicultural and more diverse
in every aspect, it is becoming increasingly important to
understand how to address and manage this diversity to everyone’s
benefit. The people of different background, races, religion,
culture, etc. create a diverse environment. Diversity features,
might include: people from different communities and/or races,
women in the workforce, people with disabilities, single mothers
/ parents, people of minorities, gays, etc. This diverse workforce
needs to be managed effectively for the benefit of companies,
as well as of the people that make up these companies. On
the other hand, companies that accommodate the special needs
of the demographically diverse workforce will become more
appealing places to work and will thereby reduce absenteeism
and turnover costs. It has also been asserted, that organizations
that value differences will cultivate non-traditional markets,
by their progressiveness, and their ability to assess non-traditional
preferences and will enjoy greater creativity, problem solving
and responsiveness as a result of the wider range of viewpoints
brought to bear on tasks (Cox and Blake, 1991).
